Branch Convention News
Eleanor Foster, Va. Branch Around the World chairman beside her trapestry which was part of the Heifer International exhibit. The Va. Branch members have donated nearly enough money to support an ark of animals. (For more from the VA convention, click here) PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE This is a wonderful time of year. The joy of Thanksgiving and Christmas surrounds us. For us as Christians, the joy is magnified by knowing that God does not come for only one day each year but for all of the days eternally. Over 100 years ago, the Order's founder, Margaret Bottome, wrote, "I am so glad Christmas makes the earthly life of our King so real to us. I am sure that the happiest Christmas we could possibly have would be in realizing what Christmas really means - 'God with us'. No costly gifts of any sort should mean as much as the realization that Christ is really God's gift to you."Christmas does not change. The spirit of Christmas does not change. Christmas this year is the same as the Christmas in 1890 when Margaret Bottome penned those words. The King's Daughters and Sons celebrate the spirit of Thanksgiving and Christmas every day. Throughout the year, not just in November and December, members constantly reach out to others in service to The King. Families who need food, clothing, and shelter are helped. Hundreds of university students receive thousands of dollars in scholarship funds to assist them in achieving their dreams. Throughout North America and in many foreign countries, the work of the Order is felt and known. All of these worthy activities are the members' responses to the unspeakably wonderful gift God has given each of us, the gift of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. As you go about giving to others at this season and throughout the year, walk humbly in service and know that you are experiencing the true meaning of Thanksgiving and Christmas. During the administration of the first George Bush, the U.S. President identified as "points of light" individuals and organizations which aimed at solving problems in this constantly changing and complex world. Each King's Daughter and Son is a point of light as he/she reaches out and volunteers in his/her local and worldwide communities. If you are not a member and would like to belong to one of the oldest Christian service organizations in North America, won't you join us? Our goals are three-fold: religious, educational, and philanthropic. You can be a part of this wonderful group that goes forward with confidence and vigor knowing that every day in every way you are excelling in the work of the Lord. Frances Buskey Sellew |
