A CHANGE OF HEART

"For where your treasure is, there will your heart be, also!"
Matthew 6:21

Did you resolve to please God? Are you sharing your heart with Him? To deepen your relationship with Him requires a "change of heart." According to scripture, all human life is centered in the heart. My concordance listed 87 verses speaking of the heart. As children of God seeking to please Him, give thought to these "heart characteristics" necessary if you truly desire a "Heart for God."

A Believing Heart: "For with the heart one believes unto righteousness and with the mouth confession if made unto salvation." Romans 10:10

A Seeking Heart: "With my whole heart I have sought you...; let me not stray from Your commandments." Psalm 119:10-11

A Clean Heart: "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me." Psalm 51:10

A Pure Heart: "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God." Matthew 5:8

A Discerning Heart: "For the Word of God is quick and powerful, sharper than a two-edged sword... and is a discerner of thoughts and intents of the heart." Hebrews 4:12

An Understanding Heart: "Therefore give your servant an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and evil." 1 Kings 3:9

A Giving Heart: "Every man according as he purposes in his heart, so let him give, for God loves a cheerful giver." 2nd Corinthians 9:7

A True Heart: "Let us draw near with a true heart, in full assurance of faith. . . ." Hebrews 10:22

A Wise Heart: "A wise heart discerns both time and judgment because for every matter there is a time for judgment." Ecclesiastes 8:5

A Loving Heart: "Love the Lord your with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind and with all your strength." Mark 12:30

The Word tells us that, "...The Lord sees not as man sees, for man looks on outward appearance, but the Lord looks in the heart." 1st Samuel 16:7b

Ava Socik's Story

I currently volunteer at one of the largest free clinics in Illinois serving the uninsured populations.

One evening, we had a patient present to the clinic who was expecting her second child in a few weeks. She had a case of severe, painful acne break out on her face. Her acne, which normally is easily treated with medication, was more complicated to treat because of the pregnancy. She told me about her work as a waitress and how, due to the severe acne, her superiors prevented her from working because the customers complained. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she explained how she needed to work and needed the money.

Physicians have the rare opportunity to uncover and explore multiple elements: physical, mental, social, emotional, spiritual, environmental, cultural, that compose the natural portrait of a patient in need. As a medical student, I am privileged to listen to and to help address my patient's troubles and needs.

(Ava is a medical student at Rush University Medical School in Chicago, IL.)
