A Health Careers Scholarship Recipient’s Message
I recently received the IOKDS Health Careers Scholarship and could not be more appreciative! Therefore, I definitely wanted to share a story/photo.
CCK is a nonprofit medical camp serving children with serious illnesses. As a camp counselor for nine weeks this past summer, I supervised, worked, and played with children who live with a variety of pediatric illnesses including diabetes, sickle cell, autism, pediatric pain, and transverse myelitis to name a few. “Phys Dis” week was particularly influential for me in that prior to CCK, I lacked the familiarity that one gains from living with a close relative or friend with a physical disability. While interacting with the children, I began to develop surprisingly new senses of awareness, adaptability, and acceptance that had never crossed my mind before this camp.
These meaningful experiences have solidified my desire to work as a physical therapist. Learning about each child’s unique exposure to rehabilitation has only deepened my curiosity about the variety of physical therapy clientele as well as the transformative technology available to treat my campers and their conditions. From this experience, I have fostered a new perspective that I intend to not only carry into my future career, but also everyday life.
Thank you all again so much for this opportunity!!
