A Typical Class

Recent classes have ranged from about 12 to 15 scholars in size. Scholars come from all over the United States, Canada, Hong Kong, Hungary, Nicaragua, Ukraine, Lebanon and the United Kingdom, for example. They come from a range of Christian faith groups and are at different places along their faith journey. Many, but not all, have a strong interest in music and the arts.

A Typical Day

Week 1 is filled with getting oriented to the Institution and the CHQ Scholarship Program, as well as getting to know the other Scholars and staff members. Weeks 2 and 3 provide time to enroll in Special Studies courses and other activities offered on the grounds. Week 4 includes several special closing events for the program.

Morning Worship 9:15 a.m. Monday to Friday

Morning Worship at 9:15 am takes place in the amphitheater, (The Amp) on Mondays through Fridays. This 45-minute service includes a sermon by the Chaplain of the Week. Scholars have the opportunity to participate in this service by reading scripture during morning worship, if they wish.

Lectures 10:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. Monday to Friday

Lectures sponsored by the Chautauqua Education Department and the Chautauqua Department of Religion take place Monday thru Friday. Chautauqua is the setting for some of the latest thinking in politics, economics, international relations, literature, science, technology, and religion by world-renowned speakers. Most programming at Chautauqua is based on a weekly theme. The morning lectures are held in the Amp from 10:45 am until noon and are sponsored by the Department of Education. The Hall of Philosophy is the setting for the 2:00 pm to 3:15 pm lecture sponsored by the Department of Religion. This lecture offers the opportunity not only to hear noted teachers, ministers and authors, but because of a more intimate setting, the chance is greater to enter into dialogue with them.
